Palm Sunday Leadership: Welcoming Jesus as King in Your Daily Decisions

Palm Sunday marks Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem - a moment of celebration that quickly led to the cross. Crowds waved palm branches, spread cloaks on the road, and shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David!” (Matthew 21:9), recognizing Him as the promised King from David's line.

Yet Jesus rode in on a humble donkey, not a warhorse (Matthew 21:1-11; fulfilling Zechariah 9:9). This was no display of earthly power. It was a deliberate statement: His kingship is different - servant-hearted, sacrificial, and rooted in God's kingdom, not human ambition.

The same crowds who hailed Him as King would soon cry “Crucify Him.” Their praise was conditional; Jesus’ reign is unconditional.

What Palm Sunday Teaches Leaders Today

Jesus Enters on His Terms, Not Ours

The people expected a political liberator to overthrow Rome. Jesus came to overthrow sin and self-rule. In leadership, we often want Jesus to bless our plans, agendas, and timelines. Palm Sunday asks: Are we welcoming Him as King on His terms? Surrendering our decisions, strategies, and outcomes to Him - even when they don’t match our expectations?

True Authority Comes Through Humility

A king on a donkey is a paradox. Yet Revelation 19:16 declares Him “King of kings and Lord of lords.” His power is not coercive but persuasive - rooted in love, service, and sacrifice. As leaders, Palm Sunday challenges us to lead with humility: listening first, serving others, and wielding influence for God’s glory rather than our own.

Daily Decisions Are Acts of Worship

The crowds laid down cloaks and branches as an act of homage. Today, welcoming Jesus as King means laying down our rights, pride, control, and comfort in everyday choices - how we handle conflict, prioritize time, steward resources, or respond to failure. Every decision is an opportunity to say “Hosanna” with our lives.

Praise Can Be Fleeting - Surrender Is Lasting

The same voices that shouted “Hosanna” later shouted “Crucify.” True allegiance isn’t emotional highs; it’s consistent obedience. Palm Sunday invites us to move beyond Sunday enthusiasm to Monday-through-Friday surrender.

Jesus’ entry wasn’t about temporary acclaim - it was the beginning of His path to the cross, where true kingship was displayed in self-giving love. As leaders, we’re called to follow that same path: yielding our “thrones” so He can reign in our hearts, teams, and decisions.

Reflection

In what area of your leadership or daily life are you still riding your own “warhorse” instead of letting Jesus enter on His humble donkey? What one decision this week could you surrender fully to Him as King?
