Jesus, the Prophet, Priest, King: Revealed at His Birth
At His birth in Bethlehem, wise men from the East arrived bearing extraordinary gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). These weren’t random treasures - they were prophetic declarations of who this Child truly was.
The early church and many biblical scholars have long seen these gifts pointing to Jesus’ threefold office: Prophet, Priest, and King - the anointed roles He perfectly fulfills.
Gold - Honoring Jesus as King
Gold, the metal of royalty, crowns, and thrones, proclaimed Jesus as the promised King. The wise men sought “the one who has been born king of the Jews” (Matthew 2:2). Scripture affirms His eternal reign: “He will reign on David’s throne… forever” (Isaiah 9:7; see also Revelation 19:16 - “King of kings and Lord of lords”). Gold reminds us Jesus rules with justice, wisdom, and unshakeable authority - inviting us to bow our lives to His sovereign leadership.
Frankincense - Worshiping Jesus as Priest
Frankincense, a fragrant incense used in temple worship and offerings, symbolized Jesus as our High Priest. Priests mediated between God and people; Jesus is the ultimate mediator who intercedes for us eternally (Hebrews 7:25). “We have a great high priest… Jesus the Son of God” (Hebrews 4:14). Frankincense points to His perfect prayers, His once-for-all sacrifice, and His ongoing ministry of grace - drawing us boldly to the throne of mercy.
Myrrh - Foretelling Jesus as Prophet and Sacrifice
Myrrh, an embalming spice and anointing oil, foreshadowed Jesus’ suffering, death, and prophetic role. Prophets spoke God’s truth boldly, often at great cost; Jesus is the greatest Prophet who reveals the Father fully (Hebrews 1:1-2; Deuteronomy 18:15 fulfilled in Him). Myrrh also hints at His sacrificial death - used at His burial (John 19:39) - pointing to the cross where He bore our sins. As Prophet, He declares God’s redemptive plan; as the Lamb, He accomplishes it.
From His birth, heaven revealed who Jesus truly is: Prophet speaking truth, Priest offering grace, King reigning eternally. Jesus fulfilled every role. Share on X
These gifts, offered to a humble child in a manger, reveal the profound mystery: Jesus is Prophet (speaking truth), Priest (offering Himself), and King (ruling forever). From His birth, heaven announced the fullness of His mission - salvation for all who believe. In a world craving direction, forgiveness, and true authority, Jesus alone perfectly embodies these roles. He speaks what we need to hear, intercedes when we fail, and reigns over every chaos.
